Sudanese man with criminal record attacks worker and breaks into clinic with knife in Athens
A man from Sudan attempted to rape a shop employee on Menander Street and subsequently broke into a polyclinic armed with a knife.
Attempted rape on Menander Street and knife-wielding break-in at polyclinic
A man from Sudan attempted to rape an employee at a shoe shop in Athens and subsequently broke into a polyclinic armed with a knife, according to Newsbeast.
The victim of the attempted rape described the attack to Star: "He came in pretending to be a customer at the shop. He asked me for a pair of shoes to serve him and, as I said 'sit down' and turned my back, I felt his body right behind mine. I started screaming. I was assaulted, regardless of the act, in my own space."
The employee's screams and her reflexes prevented the completion of the attack. She left the shop, and the perpetrator followed shortly afterwards. In video footage from that moment, he is seen using substances outside the business. A knife was found in his possession, which he did not use against the woman.
Break-in at polyclinic
Leaving Menander Street, the perpetrator ran to a polyclinic located one alley below and broke in whilst holding the knife. On the first floor of the polyclinic he was immobilised and the police were notified.
Extensive criminal record
The man was already known to the authorities. In 2021 he had been convicted of attempted rape in Kalamata, using the same method he employed on Menander Street, and was released on probation. In 2024 he was imprisoned with a sentence of three years for attempted robbery, theft and illegal weapons possession, but was released just three months later. In 2025 he was arrested again for assault of decency.
The perpetrator is in the country illegally, as his asylum application has been rejected. Despite the accumulated convictions, he had filed an appeal, with the decision expected in the days that the events unfolded.
