Match-fixing case in Greek basketball: From Amarousio complaint to the sports prosecutor
A complaint filed by Amarousio Basketball Club in April served as the starting point for an investigation by the sports prosecutor regarding alleged match-fixing in Greek basketball. These details were reported by journalist Ioanna Mandrou on MEGA, as thoroughly revealed by To Vima.
The initial complaint contained messages that were deemed suspicious for possible match-fixing and profit-taking from betting. At the centre of the judicial investigation are testimonies, written messages, SMS communications, and statements from individuals being examined as part of the inquiry.
Two individuals granted favourable criminal treatment
Two individuals voluntarily approached the sports prosecutor, declaring involvement in match-fixing incidents and providing information about the case. According to Ioanna Mandrou, they have not been placed under protected witness status, but have been granted favourable criminal treatment, as they are said to have contributed to the disclosure of critical evidence.
The first is a team official at Piraeus B. He is said to have provided specific evidence regarding match-fixing incidents, as well as information that, according to what was presented on the broadcast, implicates the president of the Greek Basketball Federation, Vangelis Liolios.
The second is an active referee. He is said to have stated that he received pressure and suggestions regarding the shaping of results in specific matches.
What the case file contains
Mandrou clarified that the case is not based on recorded telephone interceptions. The investigation is based exclusively on testimonies, electronic messages, SMS communications, and statements from individuals who have been examined by the prosecutor.
Amarousio Basketball Club's lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, confirmed that the club's complaint was the starting point of the judicial investigation and expressed the view that the evidence in the case is strong.
What does not emerge from the investigation
According to what was reported on the broadcast, there is no indication of involvement by a political figure in the case. Furthermore, the basketball clubs Olympiacos and Panathinaikos are not mentioned in the case file as defendants.
The investigation remains open. The testimonies and evaluation of the evidence are expected to determine its further development. Mandrou emphasised that the complaints and reports contained in the case file should be evaluated by the judiciary, without prejudging the guilt of any individuals involved.
