17-year-old arrested on Gavdos as trafficker of 34 migrants
A 17-year-old minor was arrested on Gavdos accused of unlawfully transporting 34 migrants. The young man was reportedly identified by those on board as the operator who transported them from the Tobruk area of Libya.
The incident occurred during a Coast Guard operation in the wider maritime region. The 34 migrants were detected aboard a vessel and transferred to Gavdos. During the identification process, those on board identified the 17-year-old as the person operating the vessel.
The minor was taken before the prosecutor of the Misdemeanour Court of Heraklion, who prosecuted him for unlawful transportation of foreigners. The case will be examined by the courts.
The arrest of a minor in a migrant trafficking case highlights once again the exploitation of inexperienced or underage individuals by trafficking networks, who use them as expendable members on illegal routes.
