Arrest of 18-year-old in Thessaloniki — charges of violence and animal abuse

According to reports from Efimerida ton Syntakton, an 18-year-old was arrested in Thessaloniki following a complaint from his same-age partner alleging repeated incidents of domestic violence and abuse of a companion animal. A felony charge was brought against him and he was referred to the investigating authorities.

The young woman contacted the police within the last 24 hours, reporting physical violence by the 18-year-old. During her examination, she reportedly disclosed two additional similar incidents that occurred over the past month.

She additionally alleged that during the episodes the young man used their dog as a means of intimidation — he reportedly held it upside down while threatening to drown it. The domestic violence unit took on the case, which ultimately led to the arrest.

The chief prosecutor brought charges against him for continued cruelty to a companion animal — at the felony level — as well as for domestic physical injury, continued threats and unlawful violence, the latter three at the misdemeanour level. The 18-year-old is being held pending a decision on his criminal treatment.
