Arrest of 26-year-old man for assault on police officer during football match

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Saturday after punching a police officer at a sports facility. His identification was carried out via the electronic surveillance system.

Police officers from the Organised Crime Suppression Division arrested on Saturday 10 October a 26-year-old man, accused of assaulting a police officer within a sports facility, according to an announcement by the Hellenic Police transmitted by Naftemporiki.

The perpetrator approached the police officer, who was carrying out security duties during the match, and initially verbally assaulted him with abusive language. He then suddenly struck him with a punch to the face.

Officers from the Organised Sports Violence Suppression Subdivision observed the assault and proceeded to identify the 26-year-old by utilising the Electronic Stadium Surveillance System (Η.Σ.Ε.Α.Ε.).

The young man was kept under discreet surveillance throughout the duration of the match and was restrained immediately after it ended. A case file was opened against him and he is expected to be brought before the competent prosecuting authority.
