A 26-year-old is in the hands of prosecuting authorities and is accused of a series of robberies against elderly women in Thessaloniki. The perpetrator broke into apartment blocks in the city and attacked his victims inside lifts.

According to reporting by ERT, the young man waited at the entrances of buildings in various areas of the city centre. When elderly women entered the lift, he would follow them and threaten them with violence, forcing them to hand over gold jewellery and cash.

Police estimate that within a one-month period, the 26-year-old carried out at least four similar attacks. The stolen goods are valued at €7,000.

The cases were solved following investigations by police authorities. The authorities managed to secure video footage that captured his actions inside a lift in an apartment building in the Sykes area.

The visual material shows the accused entering the lift together with his victim and removing valuable items. This footage was used by officers for his identification and arrest.

The 26-year-old was taken to the prosecuting authorities, where he was charged with serial robbery. The investigation continues in order to determine whether the accused had committed other similar acts in Thessaloniki.

The authorities are also examining whether the young man had accomplices or whether he acted alone. The statements of victims and analysis of the video material are expected to shed more light on the conditions under which he organised his attacks.
