Atropine in military doctor's food — arrest of woman and parents in Peristeri

A 41-year-old woman was arrested in Peristeri on Sunday, 11 October, accused of attempting to poison her separated husband, who works as a military doctor. According to Newsit.gr, her movements were recorded by a security camera that he himself had installed in his flat.

At seven in the evening, the woman used a key to enter the ground-floor flat of the 41-year-old in Peristeri and poured a liquid substance onto food. Her husband detected her actions via the camera, immediately notified the police, and rushed to the house himself.

The woman was arrested a short distance from the flat. Police handcuffed her parents as well, who were waiting for her in a car in the area. Inside the vehicle, a vial containing 10 ml of atropine was found — the substance is believed to be what was used on the food — as well as a syringe.

The case had begun earlier, when the military doctor started exhibiting symptoms of malaise after shared meals with his wife. At one of these, in a restaurant, he presented symptoms suggestive of poisoning. After leaving, he returned to the restaurant and, together with staff, examined the security cameras: in the footage, his separated wife could be seen pouring liquid onto his plate whilst he was absent in the toilet. This led him to install cameras in his flat as well.

Against the 41-year-old, a case file was drawn up for attempted grievous bodily harm. Her parents face charges of complicity. The couple have one child together.

The vial containing the substance has been sent to the State Chemistry Laboratory for analysis. The authorities do not rule out upgrading the charges, should it be proven that the substance is particularly dangerous to the human body.
