A 42-year-old man was arrested in Xyrovrysi, Kilkis, following a fire caused by agricultural machinery during farm operations.

In Xyrovrysi, Kilkis, firefighters proceeded to arrest a 42-year-old man who allegedly caused a fire accidentally whilst operating threshing equipment on agricultural land.
The incident occurred early afternoon the previous Wednesday. Specialist units of the Fire Service dealing with arson crimes conducted an investigation to establish the exact causes. Following completion of the preliminary inquiry, the suspect was arrested on the orders of the prosecutor of the District Court of Kilkis.
The fire destroyed a total of 120 hectares of land, of which 10 were cultivated areas and 110 were forest region.
According to information made public, from the start of 2026 to 9 July, 547 fines have been imposed with a total value exceeding 700,000 euros. In addition, 173 arrests have been made for fires, with 92.49% relating to cases of negligence and only 7.51% to deliberate arson.
The Fire Service emphasises that most fires result from human error and calls on citizens to strictly observe fire safety measures, particularly when carrying out work that may generate sparks.
