A 45-year-old woman, a Ukrainian citizen, was arrested in Chania by officers from the Arson Crime Investigation Unit following a fire that broke out in an agricultural area.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, shortly before 1 p.m., in the "Monastery of Saint George" area near Charobia in Mourniès, Chania. The fire started following a report from a citizen who witnessed the incident.

According to preliminary investigation findings, the woman had personally gathered objects into a pile and subsequently set them on fire with an open flame. The area where the fire broke out was filled with dry grass, whilst forest vegetation was located in very close proximity, a fact that created serious risk of the fire spreading.

Immediately after the act, the 45-year-old attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle bearing Ukrainian registration plates. However, following an operation by investigation officers with the assistance of the police, the vehicle was located parked in a residential courtyard in the city of Chania.

The woman was arrested and admitted her involvement in the arson. A case file was compiled against her and she was referred to the prosecutorial authorities.
