A 45-year-old beekeeper was arrested yesterday evening as the person responsible for the fire that broke out on Thursday at Veiko Grove, according to reports by Naftemporiki. The arrest was made as part of the flagrant offence procedure.

The Arson Crime Prevention Division (ΔΑΕΕ) identified the man based on witness testimony and inspection of the scene. Witnesses had reported from the outset that people were smoking beehives in the area during work operations when the fire broke out in dry grass. The inspection confirmed these findings: the burnt area was located directly next to the beehives.

The 45-year-old was issued an administrative fine of €3,557.81. The Athens First Instance Court Prosecutor has already been informed of the case, and the arrested man is expected to be brought before them today.

The ΔΑΕΕ announced that from 1 January to 4 June 2026, a total of 393 administrative fines have been imposed, amounting to €367,695.65, whilst 69 arrests have been made as part of the flagrant offence procedure. The service and investigative services of the Fire Service state that they remain on heightened operational readiness, conducting continuous inspections and holding parties immediately responsible in each case of breach of current legislation.
