45-year-old arrested at Athens airport for cryptocurrency fraud
In the early morning hours of Friday, officers from the Security Department of the Aviation Police Directorate at Athens Airport proceeded to arrest a 45-year-old foreign national in the departure halls of "Eleftherios Venizelos". The man was about to travel to Cyprus.
A European arrest warrant had been issued against him by the Belgian authorities. The charges he faces concern membership of a criminal organisation engaged in cross-border activity, fraud, and money laundering from illegal activities.
An investigation by Belgian authorities shows that since 2023 the arrested man has been participating in a network that defrauded citizens through cryptocurrency investments. The 45-year-old acted as a point of contact with potential victims, presenting false investment proposals and guiding them through their alleged placements.
The organisation's profits from this activity exceed €160,000.
The arrested man was referred to the competent prosecutor for further proceedings.
