A 45-year-old foreign national was arrested on 10 July 2026 in the departure area of Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, shortly before boarding an aircraft bound for Nicosia.

The arrest was carried out by staff from Athens Airport Security, as the suspect had been the subject of a European arrest warrant issued by Belgian authorities.

Prosecutors contend that from 2023 onwards the man in question joined a group that operated internationally, defrauding investors through digital currencies. Members of the network approached potential investors, promising high returns on cryptocurrency.

The arrested man assumed the role of communication coordinator with the victims, guiding them through the alleged investment moves. The financial damage caused by the group's activities is estimated at over €160,000.

The main charges against him are participation in a criminal organisation, fraud and money laundering. Following his arrest, he was referred to the competent prosecutor.
