A 45-year-old foreign national was arrested at Athens airport on the basis of a European warrant issued by Belgium. He is accused of participating in an international criminal group that defrauded victims through fake investment schemes involving cryptocurrencies.

On Friday morning, police officers serving at the Airport Policing Directorate of Athens International Airport detained a 45-year-old non-Greek national who was about to board a plane bound for Cyprus. A European arrest warrant had been issued against him by the Belgian authorities.
The detainee is alleged to have been part of an international network of fraudsters that has been operating since 2023. Members of the group approached citizens, offering fake investment opportunities through digital currencies. He is reported to have taken on the role of contact coordinator, speaking directly with targets and guiding them regarding their alleged investments.
The sum he is alleged to have defrauded exceeds €160,000. The offences attributed to him include membership of a criminal organisation, fraud, and money laundering from illegal activities.
After being handcuffed, he was taken to the prosecutor.
