A 53-year-old man, an Albanian national, was located and arrested at a hotel in Thessaloniki during the early morning hours of Friday. The operation was carried out as part of cooperation between the International Police Cooperation Directorate of the Hellenic Police Headquarters and the Greek Police Association, according to a report by Naftemporiki.
The 53-year-old had crossed the border at a checkpoint in northern Greece early in the morning. The prosecuting authorities were immediately mobilised, located him at a lodging in the city, and brought him in for examination.
Through INTERPOL channels, it was established that a Red Notice had been issued for the specific man by the authorities of his country. The international arrest warrant concerned his apprehension and extradition for offences related to participation in an organised criminal network and laundering of proceeds from unlawful acts, including cases of drug trafficking.
Following notification of the Deputy Prosecutor of Thessaloniki, an order for remand in custody was issued. The arrested man is expected to appear before the prosecuting authority for further proceedings.
The case highlights the role of cross-border cooperation in locating wanted individuals.
