Arrest of 66-year-old man with outstanding 120-year sentences in Lamia

Police have arrested a 66-year-old man against whom outstanding convictions totalling 120 years have been pending, according to ERT. The arrest operation was coordinated between police departments in Thessaloniki and Athens.
According to ERT, the first court decisions against the 66-year-old began to be issued from 2011, mainly for economic crimes. The cases involve forgery, tax evasion, fraud and other serious economic offences, both misdemeanours and felonies.
The defendant had previously fled abroad. He was extradited to Greece and appeared before the authorities, declaring his intention to cooperate, but subsequently disappeared again, resulting in a new search operation being launched.
Police from the Harilaou-Analipsi Security Division in Thessaloniki were informed that the wanted man was in the Lamia area. A coordinated operation followed and the 66-year-old was arrested.
The total of 120 years results from the accumulation of many court decisions issued against him in recent years. However, as ERT clarifies, Greek criminal law provides for maximum limits on actual sentence served, depending on the type and circumstances of the convictions, so the defendant is not going to serve 120 years in custody.
Following his arrest, the 66-year-old was brought before the competent prosecutorial and judicial authorities to determine his further criminal treatment.
