Yesterday afternoon, in central Athens, police arrested a 25-year-old Yemeni national. The operation was carried out in the area around Neos Kosmos following reports that reached the authorities concerning inappropriate behaviour by the individual towards women.
Witness accounts reported that the young man was moving around on a motorcycle in public spaces and appeared to be following young women through narrow passages underneath the street level. One of the women who received his unwanted attention was 26 years old. She managed to escape from the unknown man at a spot near a children's play area.
Once the services were informed of the incidents, police officers serving in rapid intervention units began investigations in the wider area. Eventually, the 25-year-old was located on a main road in the area and arrested.
During a check of his documents, it was established that he did not possess the necessary papers for legal residence in the country. Consequently, in addition to the charge of violating human dignity, he was also charged with illegal entry and residence on Greek territory.
The arrested man was taken to the prosecutor to follow the prescribed legal procedures.
