A man believed to be the head of a group of fraudsters has been arrested by the Cyber Crime Division following a report of fraud against an 85-year-old woman. Members of the gang posed as employees of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator and managed to obtain 200 gold coins from her, with the value of the haul estimated at around €500,000.

According to reports, the perpetrators called elderly people and presented the familiar scenario about an imminent electricity supply cut-off. They then claimed that valuable items such as gold and cash were at risk of being damaged, persuading the victims to hand over their savings.

The police investigation led to the identification of the alleged leader, who had set up a telephone centre in an abandoned building in the western suburbs of Athens. From there, calls were directed to potential victims.
