A 42-year-old police officer with many years of service in the Drug Enforcement Directorate was arrested for involvement in drug-related cases, following an investigation conducted by the Internal Affairs Service.
The defendant in question had been transferred to a less active position in recent months, as he faced a series of complaints. According to the authorities, he is alleged to have extorted drug traffickers by offering them removal from the department's records in exchange for financial payment. He is also accused of demanding money to testify as a witness in court proceedings, facilitating more favourable rulings for the traders.
His arrest was triggered by revealing conversations conducted via the encrypted communication platform SKY-ECC. Previously, competent foreign services had submitted to the Greek Police a file containing thousands of conversations and written messages, which were analysed by the domestic authorities.
This case is the first to reach the courts based on this particular file. The Internal Affairs Service investigation involves two additional individuals who do not belong to the Force, whilst evidence indicates possible involvement of other officers of the same rank. However, it remains unclear whether the additional police officers will be prosecuted.
