Four incidents on Greek islands — Coast Guard in action
Four separate incidents in Symi, Poros, Chios and Myrina were recorded by the Hellenic Coast Guard (HCG) over the past twenty-four hours, according to an announcement from hcg.gr.
Smuggler arrested in Symi
In the afternoon hours of the previous day, officers of the Symi Port Authority identified five foreign nationals — one man, three women and a minor — in the "Gialos" area and transferred them to the Port Authority.
In the early hours today, a Coast Guard patrol vessel spotted a sailing boat east of the "Pedi" anchorage, on which a 33-year-old Turkish national was aboard. The foreign nationals identified him as their smuggler and the man was arrested. According to statements from the five foreign nationals, they had departed at midday yesterday from Turkish shores near the "Selimiye" area, a total of 13 to 15 people, each paying the operator 6,000 euros for their transportation. The sailing boat was seized by the Symi Harbour Authority, which is conducting the preliminary investigation.
Arrest for drugs in Poros
In the early morning hours today, officers of the Poros Port Authority arrested two Israeli nationals — aged 53 and 47 — for violation of article 29 of Law 4139/13 concerning controlled substances. Following information gathered, the two foreign nationals were found to be in possession of and using narcotic substances whilst aboard a passenger-tourist vessel under Greek flag, which was operating a route from Agkistri to Poros. During a check carried out at Poros harbour, a 15-centimetre metal object was found in the possession of the 47-year-old, whilst three paper napkins with traces of narcotic substance were brought to the Port Authority. The seized material is to be sent for analysis to the competent service.
76-year-old dead in Chios
In the early hours today, the Chios Port Authority was informed of the recovery of a 76-year-old Greek national without consciousness from the sea area "Agioi Apostoloi" at Petries, in the Chios-Aliveri municipality. The man was given first aid with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of an automated external defibrillator. He was then transported by EKAB ambulance to Aliveri Health Centre, where his death was confirmed. The Chios Harbour Authority ordered the carrying out of an autopsy and toxicological examination by the Athens Forensic Service.
Vessel adrift in Myrina
In the early morning hours, the Myrina Port Authority was notified of a recreational vessel adrift due to engine failure, with two Greek nationals aboard, outside the harbour. A lifeboat and the fishing vessel "Chrysovalanto" N.M. 158 rushed to the scene, with its assistance the vessel berthed safely in the harbour. No injuries or marine pollution were reported.
