Arrest of fraud "collector" in Atalandi — his accomplice remains at large
Two parallel pursuits unfolded on the afternoon of Monday, 14 September in Atalandi, resulting in the arrest of a member of a telephone fraud network. According to Dikastiko.gr, citing LamiaReport, police officers from the local Police Department and forces in the area identified the suspects before they could obtain money from victims in the Locri region.
The network operated by impersonating "accountants" — a widespread telephone fraud tactic against citizens. Two "collectors" from the network attempted to operate in the broader area, but police mobilised immediately and prevented the completion of the fraud.
Foot pursuit through the town
As soon as police identified one of the two suspects — a Greek national aged approximately 25 to 30 years — he attempted to escape by running through the urban area of Atalandi. The police officers pursued him on foot, cornered him and immobilised him, handcuffing him at the point of arrest. He was subsequently escorted on foot to the patrol car from the same location.
High speeds on the PATHE motorway
At the same time, the second suspect was driving his vehicle from Atalandi towards the service road and then onto the PATHE motorway. He drove at excessive speed and performed dangerous manoeuvres, resulting in an immediate order being issued for a checkpoint to be set up at the toll gates in the direction of Boeotia. The driver, however, exploited a secondary provincial road shortly before the checkpoint and managed to escape. He remains at large.
Investigations into previous fraud cases in Phthiotis
The arrested young man is being held and questioned at the Locri Police Department. The prosecuting authorities are simultaneously investigating whether the two suspects are implicated in previous telephone fraud cases in Phthiotis and wider Central Greece. Investigations to locate the accomplice are ongoing.
