Officers from the Arson Crime Investigation Directorate arrested a 70-year-old French national, who is accused of starting a fire in Perachora whilst working on a farm without safety protection.

Men from the Arson Crime Investigation Directorate proceeded to arrest a French citizen, aged 70, who is considered responsible for starting a fire in Perachora, Loutraki.

The elderly man was working on agricultural land, cutting grass with a machine that used a metal disc, but without having taken the prescribed safety measures. From the operation of the equipment came sparks which led to the ignition of dry vegetation.

The fire was brought under control within a short period of time thanks to the immediate mobilisation of strong forces. At the scene, more than one hundred firefighters are operating with thirty vehicles, foot patrols, whilst from the air three aeroplanes and five helicopters are dropping water. Support is also being provided by water tankers and machinery from the Attica and Peloponnese regions.

The mayor of the area, Giorgos Gkionis, stated to a television station that the situation is improving continuously. He mentioned that certain residences are located in close proximity to the fire front, however to date no material damage to buildings has been reported. He expressed optimism about complete extinguishing within the next few hours.

The civil protection service had issued a timely message via the emergency number 112, calling on citizens to remain vigilant and to follow the directions of the relevant authorities.
