A 70-year-old man was arrested in Kalochori, Thessaloniki, after he used a flame to drive away insects, resulting in a fire breaking out at an industrial plant.

Man, 70, arrested for arson by negligence at tile factory

A 70-year-old man was arrested in Kalochori, an area in the Municipality of Delta in Thessaloniki, following a fire that destroyed a tile manufacturing plant. The incident occurred at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 9 July 2026 and lasted for hours until it was brought under control.

The investigation was undertaken by the specialist department of the Fire Service that handles arson cases (A.K.A.E.E.). The authorities located the elderly man and arrested him in flagrante delicto.

As emerged from the investigation, the arrested man had set fire to paper with an open flame, attempting to exterminate wasps that had appeared in the area. However, the flame spread rapidly to nearby storage areas, resulting in extensive damage to the industrial facility.

A fine of €5,886.56 was imposed against him for violation of the provisions concerning fire prevention. The case is now in the hands of the judiciary.
