On Saturday, police officers serving at Chania Airport proceeded to arrest a 56-year-old man from Germany. The man had been spotted taking photographs of military aircraft in the Akrotiri area, using professional photography equipment.

The suspect was brought before the prosecutor, where he denied acting as a spy. According to reports by state television, the 56-year-old claimed that he had come to Crete for tourism with his family — his wife and child. Additionally, he reportedly said that the photography was an amateur interest of his and that he did not know there was a ban on taking pictures in that particular zone.

Despite his claims, the prosecuting authorities are continuing their investigation. They are examining the material found stored on his camera, as television reports indicated. The defendant is expected to testify on Tuesday.
