Police arrested a man accused of participating in a gang that defrauded elderly women, obtaining more than 180,000 euros and jewellery worth 4,000 euros.

A man was arrested on the afternoon of Friday 3 July 2026 in Igoumenitsa, accused of participation in a gang that defrauded the elderly. The arrested man is alleged to have acted as a collector of money and valuables obtained from the victims.
According to the authorities' investigation, gang members approached elderly women by posing as accountants. They persuaded them to hand over cash, gold and jewellery, claiming that the items were old and needed to be replaced. In other cases, the victims believed their money needed to be recorded to avoid a fine from the tax authority.
At least two elderly women fell victim to the fraud. One lost 180,000 euros, whilst the second had jewellery worth approximately 4,000 euros taken from her. The perpetrators attempted to defraud a third person, but this individual detected their intentions in time and refused to cooperate.
Police located the accused in the Igoumenitsa area. A search of his home uncovered and seized 450 euros in cash, as well as the motorbike he used to travel to the victims' residences.
The case file formed against him was submitted to the Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance of Thesprotia. Subsequently, an examining magistrate of the Court of First Instance of Thesprotia issued an arrest warrant, based on which authorities proceeded with the arrest of the suspect.
