A foreign national was arrested in Boeotia for human trafficking and labour exploitation of eight foreign agricultural workers. Investigations into his accomplices are continuing.
Arrest in Boeotia for human trafficking: eight agricultural workers in exploitative conditions
According to Dikastiko.gr, police authorities in Boeotia proceeded on Friday afternoon, 11 September, with the arrest of a foreign national, accused of human trafficking and violation of foreign nationals legislation. The operation was conducted as part of an organised action by the Thebes Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes Department, following the evaluation of information that had come to the attention of the authorities.
Eight foreign nationals found in residential property
During the investigation, police officers located eight foreign nationals in a property in an area of Boeotia. From the investigation it emerged, according to police, that these individuals were subjected to systematic labour exploitation.
The arrested person, along with accomplices as yet unknown, is alleged to have forced the foreign nationals to work continuously as agricultural workers. The victims were not receiving their earned wages, whilst they were not provided with days of daily rest.
Retention of travel documents
The alleged perpetrators also proceeded, according to police, to retain the travel documents of the victims. The seizure of documents constitutes one of the characteristic elements identified by the authorities in the course of the investigation.
Preliminary investigation and outstanding matters
The preliminary investigation was undertaken by the Thebes Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes Department. Investigations into locating and identifying the alleged accomplices of the arrested person are ongoing.
The accused is expected to be brought before the District Prosecutor's Office of Boeotia, Parallel Seat of Thebes.
