Hundreds of photographs and videos depicting sexual abuse of minors — some under 12 years old — have been found on the electronic devices of a 52-year-old obstetrician and gynaecologist from the northern suburbs of Attica, according to Ethnos. The doctor, widely known in the medical profession, admitted to police that he possessed the digital material, but claimed he kept it exclusively for "personal use".

The 52-year-old ran a private practice and worked with major maternity clinics in Attica. He is now in custody and is expected to appear before an investigating magistrate on Monday to be questioned about the charges he faces.

How the authorities identified him

The investigation began following a tip-off from the specialised American child protection organisation NCMEC and from Google, which identified an account uploading the material in question online. Officials from the Cybercrime Prosecution authority analysed the digital traces and identified the 52-year-old.

Subsequently, a search was carried out, with a prosecutor present, at his residence in the northern suburbs, as reported by Mega. The investigation resulted in the seizure of a computer, a laptop, hard drives, memory cards, a tablet and mobile phones.

Reaction in the medical profession

The arrest has caused significant upheaval in the medical community. The president of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists stated that the arrested man had never given any indication or sign of misconduct, expressing the profession's shock at the development.
