Iranian smuggler arrested on Agathonissi following chase

Coast Guard personnel immobilised and arrested a 46-year-old man of Iranian nationality, who is accused of transporting irregular migrants by speedboat in the maritime area near Agathonissi.

The suspect was spotted sailing towards the eastern shores of the island. When the crew of the Coast Guard vessel ordered him to stop for inspection, he ignored the signals and attempted to escape. A chase at sea followed, resulting in his vessel being immobilised at a rocky location in the area.

The occupants, refugees and migrants of various nationalities, were taken to an accommodation facility on Samos. According to what they told the authorities, they had each paid 1,500 euros for their transport to Greek territory.

The arrested man faces charges of illegal entry into the country, trafficking of foreign nationals, and disobedience to authorities.
