A metropolitan was arrested in Petralona, accused of exposing his genitals to passers-by, including children and elderly people. Police proceeded with the arrest following complaints from citizens.
In statements made to the programme "Apokalýpseis", a priest of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, Father Evangelos, expressed the view that behind this behaviour lies some form of illness. "A man of the Church cannot fail to have something wrong when he does something like this," he stated characteristically.
The priest himself, who stated that he belongs to the Patriarchate of Alexandria and knows the accused personally, noted that the medical sciences should examine the case. "Behind this behaviour there must be hidden some problem that affects the psychological sphere of the person, where truly medicine should bend over and help him," he added.
The Patriarchate of Alexandria issued a statement in which it states that it will provide the legal support provided for the accused metropolitan, who is secretary-general of the Holy and Sacred Synod.
