Police forces proceeded with the arrest of a man who is accused of firing shots into the air during a festive event in a settlement of the Municipality of Heraklion. The incident occurred on the evening of the Klidoni festival, whilst more than 1,500 people were present at the location.

According to information released, the arrested man holds the position of president of the local Cultural Association. He reportedly claimed to the police that the use of the weapon was intended to prevent an incident which, as he argued, could have taken a dangerous turn.

The man holds a valid hunting licence. Despite his claims, the prosecuting authorities arrested him on the spot. The presence of the weapon and its use amid a crowd caused disturbance among those present.

The case is considered particularly serious, as under the new legislation the actions of the accused now fall under felony level.
