38-year-old taxi driver arrested in Athens: extorted 600 euros from tourists
Police officers from the Constitution District arrested a 38-year-old taxi driver who was extorting tourists on routes from the airport. A second complaint is being investigated against him for fraud involving 800 euros.
Taxi driver in Athens extorted tourists with threats of violence
Google News CY — Crime (el) reports that police officers from the Crime Investigation and Detection Division of the Constitution District arrested a 38-year-old taxi driver following an arrest warrant. The accused was taking excessive sums from tourists through threats of violence for journeys from "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport to Athens city centre.
On the evening of 13 August, the 38-year-old collected an Israeli family of tourists from Athens International Airport with their destination a hotel in the city centre. Upon arrival, the driver repeatedly threatened the family members with violence, demanding 600 euros to allow them to disembark and collect their luggage.
Following the victims' complaint, police analysed digital data, identified the perpetrator and compiled a case file for robbery. The 38-year-old was taken before the Athens District Prosecutor's Office.
At the same time, a second complaint is being investigated against him from a tourist from whom the accused attempted to obtain 800 euros through fraud.
