Greek police have arrested three people in connection with an arson attack in Thessaloniki that claimed the life of an elderly woman.

Greek police have proceeded with the arrest of three people in connection with an arson attack that occurred at the home of a New Democracy politician in Thessaloniki. In the incident, which took place early in the morning of 1 July, the 72-year-old mother of the politician lost her life.
According to a report by liepajniekiem.lv, among those arrested are one woman and two men, who had previously been of interest to prosecuting authorities. The attack took place in the garage of a residential building, where vehicles were set on fire, resulting in the elderly woman sustaining fatal burns. Four other people were injured.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced to Parliament that the authorities had fulfilled their commitment to locate and arrest those responsible ten days after the incident. He stressed that the state would continue to resolutely confront those who attempt to spread fear through violent actions.
The country has been struck on several occasions by politically motivated violent action. Although previous terrorist organisations have been largely dismantled, autonomous groups continue to carry out arson attacks and explosions against politicians, state services, police stations, banks and businesses.
On the same day, the authorities proceeded with the arrest of two people in connection with the case of the attack on the Marfin-Egnatia bank in Athens in 2010. Citizens' Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis stated that democracy is strong and ultimately always prevails, not through retaliation, but through the restoration of justice and safeguarding of the rule of law.
