After 16 years, two men aged 42 have been apprehended by prosecuting authorities in connection with the attack on Marfin bank in 2010, in which three employees lost their lives. The arrested men were brought before an investigating magistrate and requested an adjournment to prepare their defence, which was scheduled for 14 July 2026.
The case had remained unsolved since 2010, until an anonymous electronic message reached the Organised Crime Combating Directorate. Its contents mentioned names implicated in the fatal act, including individuals for whom warrants had already been issued, as well as other members of the same group.
The prosecuting authorities assessed that the information carried significant weight and proceeded to re-examine all the preliminary investigative material. Warrants were executed against the two men for intentional homicide with premeditation. At the same time, authorities are seeking a woman aged 46 who is believed to have participated in the act and is residing abroad.
The defence counsel of the arrested men, Anny Paparousou, argued that the case file lacks substantial foundation and characterised the entire proceeding as hasty. She expressed the conviction that this is a mere farce that will be dismissed by the courts of justice.
On behalf of the victims, lawyer Thrasyvulos Kontaxis spoke of a possible "salvation and vindication" for the families. He recalled that previous criminal prosecution efforts had yielded no results. He also noted that in the past there had been attempts from political circles to suppress the incident.
