Police operations have led to the arrest of members of two groups of young people who were engaged in thefts and robberies against passengers, primarily elderly, at ISAP stations in Attica. The perpetrators would watch their potential victims and attack them when they were in vulnerable positions, moving away on their own from the platforms.
In one of the incidents recorded on video, an elderly woman who had just exited the station in Perissos fell to the pavement when a minor forcibly snatched a gold chain from her neck. The perpetrator had followed her from the station, set up an ambush, and after carrying out the attack, disappeared in seconds, leaving her lying on the ground.
Police investigations revealed that the incidents were not isolated. The young criminals are said to have operated in a specific manner, selecting victims who left the stations alone. The Hellenic Police Force dismantled two separate groups with minor members. One of these consisted of five individuals who are alleged to have followed their victims immediately after they exited the trains and had committed at least six robberies within a six-month period.
Victims described how the perpetrators operated. In several cases they were not limited to simple snatches, but used various methods to extract money and personal items. One victim reported that the perpetrators had cut open his bag from below with a sharp object, removing not only money but also documents such as identity cards and driving licences.
