Three men, aged 24 to 29, are being held in custody following their arrest by the Counter-Terrorism Service of Northern Greece, facing charges related to three simultaneous firebombing attacks in Thessaloniki.

The incidents occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 July 2026. The targets were external areas of apartment blocks at various locations in the city where residents with political activity in New Democracy lived. The attacks took place within a timeframe of less than twenty minutes.

The attacks caused serious material damage to building entrances and parking areas. Three cars and two motorcycles were burnt, whilst flames also spread to natural gas metres. Four people suffered burns and respiratory difficulties. Unfortunately, a woman – a relative of a politician – succumbed to her injuries.

Police from the Division for Combating Serious Violent Crime proceeded with the arrests on 10 July. During investigations at the attack sites, remains of the makeshift devices that had been used were located and seized.

According to the announcement from the prosecutorial authorities, the 29-year-old and the 26-year-old are believed to have had an executive role, whilst the youngest arrested person provided his residence as a safe house for the others, before and after the placement of the incendiary devices.

The Hellenic Police believe two different groups were operating. The first is believed to be responsible for the arson attack at the home of the Nestor family. Investigative actions to locate three further suspects connected to the other two attacks – at the homes of the president of the governing committee of the New Democracy regional branch in Thessaloniki Zisis Iakeimioglou and former MP Savvas Anastasiades – are continuing at an intensive pace.

The three detainees were brought before the prosecutor.
