Greek police have arrested three people over the arson attack on the home of a politician from the ruling party in Thessaloniki, where his 72-year-old mother lost her life.

Three people have been arrested over the armed attack that occurred on 1 July at the home of a politician from the ruling party "New Democracy" in Thessaloniki, during which his 72-year-old mother lost her life.
According to information from liepajniekiem.lv, among those arrested are one woman and two men, who had previously come to the attention of the authorities. The attack took place in the early morning hours of 1 July, when unknown assailants set fire to vehicles in the garage of the apartment building where the politician lived. The elderly mother was fatally injured by the flames, whilst four other people sustained injuries.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced in Parliament that ten days after the incident, the authorities had fulfilled their commitment to locate and arrest those responsible. He stressed that the state would continue to decisively confront those who attempt to sow fear in society through violence.
On the same day, police proceeded to arrest two more people connected with the attack on the "Marfin-Egnatia" bank in Athens on 5 May 2010. At that time, protesters had thrown Molotov cocktails at the building, causing a fire to break out. Three bank employees, including one who was pregnant, became trapped and died from asphyxiation. The investigation into this case had been reactivated in 2020, and today's arrests mark the first time suspects have been identified.
Over recent decades, Greece has been shaken by multiple instances of politically motivated violence. Although most earlier terrorist organisations have been dismantled, autonomous groups continue to carry out arsons and bombings, targeting politicians, state services, police stations, banks and businesses.
Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis stated: "Our democracy is strong and ultimately always prevails. It does not prevail through revenge. Its victories are connected with the restoration of justice and the safeguarding of the rule of law."
