Greek police have arrested three individuals suspected of involvement in an arson attack on a politician's residence that resulted in the death of his 72-year-old mother.

Three suspects are in the custody of Greek police following an operation in Thessaloniki. The arrested individuals are accused of an arson attack against the residence of conservative politician Aphrodite Nestora, which cost the life of her 72-year-old mother.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of 1 July. Cars parked in the garage of the apartment building were set ablaze, resulting in the elderly woman suffering fatal burns. A further four people were injured during the attack.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced to parliament that authorities had kept their commitment to identify and arrest those responsible within ten days of the incident. He emphasised that the state would continue to respond decisively against those attempting to spread fear in society through violent actions.
The motives behind the attack appear to be political. The ruling party "New Democracy" counts the latest victim in a series of incidents that have struck the country over recent decades. Whilst previous terrorist organisations have largely been dismantled, autonomous groups continue to carry out arson attacks and bombings, targeting politicians, state services, police departments, banks and businesses.
