Police authorities have arrested two men aged 42, who are implicated in an incendiary bomb attack against a Marfin bank branch on Stadiou Street in May 2010. The attack resulted in the deaths of three employees. Separately, an arrest warrant remains outstanding for a woman aged 46 who is in the United Kingdom.
The incident occurred during a wider strike mobilisation against the financial measures of the period. Molotov cocktail attacks struck the building, resulting in three employees becoming trapped by smoke and flames on the third floor and losing their lives through asphyxiation.
The victims were Angeliki Papathanasopoulou, who was pregnant, Epaminondas Tsakalis and Paraskevi Zoulia. Images of them from the balconies had shocked the entire country.
The investigation was reactivated through intervention by the political leadership of the Ministry of Citizen Protection. The organised crime task force took on the task of processing available material and information. The prosecuting authorities arrived at the specific suspects, who are reported to belong to the anti-establishment movement.
Significantly, the three individuals had not been of concern to authorities in the early stages of the preliminary investigation. The investigating judge handling the case issued the relevant warrants based on more recent findings.
