Greek police conducted their first operation within the framework of exploiting intercepts from the encrypted communications platform "Sky ECC", according to alfapress.al.
In this first operation, a 42-year-old drugs police officer was arrested, who is alleged to have cooperated with an international drug trafficking network. According to the investigation by the Internal Affairs Service, the officer received monthly payments from the network in order to provide information and facilitate the avoidance of arrest by its members.
It was also established that he attempted to distribute large quantities of drugs on behalf of a third party, while at the same time involving people from his circle in the illegal activity of the network. Arrest warrants have been issued against two traffickers, and further details about the operation are expected to be made public within the coming hours.
Sources from the Greek police report that Greek police gained access to Sky ECC communications in April 2024. The Management and Information Analysis Department (DIDAP) now holds 4,500 audio files, 28 million SMS messages and 250,000 photographs of Greek interest.
In May, a senior official from the Ministry of Citizen Protection stated to Kathimerini that the digital data are being analysed and are feeding a total of 12 investigative cases — old and new — with new evidence concerning cases of corruption, drug trafficking and homicides. Approximately 3,000 users of Sky ECC have been active directly or indirectly in Greece, among them hundreds of Albanian nationals.
