Fraudsters who impersonated employees of an electricity company managed to obtain more than 200 gold sovereigns from elderly people in the wider Athens area, acquiring illegal proceeds exceeding €450,000.
Police proceeded with the arrest of a 31-year-old, who is allegedly involved in the series of telephone fraud cases and thefts. Simultaneously, a 22-year-old accomplice was identified and is being sought by the prosecuting authorities.
The perpetrators applied a specific methodology: they contacted elderly people by telephone, presenting themselves as representatives of an electricity provider. Subsequently, they visited the homes of their victims and, exploiting the trust they had cultivated, removed the valuable gold sovereigns.
The investigation by the Greek Police is ongoing, as the possible involvement of those arrested in other similar cases reported in the capital region is being examined.
