Elderly man arrested for fire that destroyed tile factory in Kalochori

A 70-year-old man was brought to a police station in the Kalochori area in Thessaloniki following a fire that broke out in an industrial tile factory building. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, 9 July 2026, on a plot of land near the intersection of two roads, within the boundaries of Delta Municipality.

According to ERT reporting, the specialist arson department of the Fire Service took over the investigation. The investigation revealed that the cause was a careless action by the arrested man. The elderly man used lit paper in order to remove wasps from the area. The flame spread to nearby storage facilities and subsequently to the factory, which was engulfed in flames for several hours.

The 70-year-old was arrested in flagrante delicto on a charge of arson through negligence. At the same time, he was issued a fine of €5,886.56 for violation of relevant provisions.

The firefighting operation by firefighters lasted several hours until the fire was brought under control.
