SYRIZA on EYP prosecution in Predator case: "Some crimes cannot be covered up"
A senior EYP official has filed a criminal complaint against four convicted individuals in the wiretapping case. SYRIZA launches an attack against the Mitsotakis government.
EYP prosecution for Predator brings wiretapping back into focus
The judicial case over wiretapping via Predator enters a new phase following the submission of a criminal complaint by a serving senior official of the EYP (Greek intelligence service). According to In.gr, Giannis Papadopoulos—who had been under surveillance by the malicious software—filed on Tuesday, 1 September, accompanied by his lawyer Apostolos Pontas, a new criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office of the Athens court of first instance.
The complaint is directed against those convicted at first instance—Tal Dilian, Felix Bizio, Ioannis Lavranou and Sara Chamu—for a series of felonies related to breach of privacy of conversations and the formation of a criminal organisation. At the same time, an investigation is being sought into the commission of espionage against the country.
Lawyer Apostolos Pontas described the development as a landmark moment for the case. "This development constitutes a redefinition and a new starting point in the judicial course of the case, since the core of it is being transformed and expanded, from the moment that an official of the National Intelligence Service is seeking an investigation of the case for espionage, which constitutes a threat to national security," he stated.
SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance immediately capitalised on the filing to launch an attack against the government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. In a statement it stressed that "the prosecution brings urgently to the surface the case which the Court of Cassation has three times shelved", pointing out that the victim had under his responsibility the counter-espionage and organised crime divisions of the EYP.
The party emphasised that the EYP official "is doing what prominent ministers of the Mitsotakis government, senior military and state officials who were under surveillance via the illegal software avoided doing". "It appears, in the end, that some crimes cannot be covered up, not even in Mr Mitsotakis's Greece," the statement concluded.
SYRIZA–PS also demanded immediate mobilisation of the judiciary, stating that "we expect and demand that the judiciary move without any inclination towards inertia, postponement and obfuscation of the case". It simultaneously addressed the government, calling on it to take responsibility for the scandal.
