Telephone scam in Florina: two arrests – victim lost jewellery and €2,700
Two individuals were arrested in Florina after defrauding a 52-year-old by posing as tax officials. They took jewellery worth approximately €9,000 and cash of €2,700.
Arrests in Florina for telephone scam using tax office pretext
Two individuals – one of whom is a minor – were arrested in an area of Florina following a coordinated police operation, according to Dikastiko.gr. A telephone scam case led to the arrests, after the two individuals took jewellery, gold items and pounds sterling worth approximately €9,000, as well as cash totalling €2,700.
The victim, a 52-year-old man, received a call on his home landline from an unknown man. The perpetrator presented himself as a tax office employee and claimed that it was compulsory to register money and valuables in order for the 52-year-old to avoid an alleged fine.
Under this pretext, the 52-year-old was persuaded to place the jewellery, gold items, pounds sterling and cash in a bag. He then took the bag outside his house, where it was collected by the two individuals sought by the police.
The victim realised the scam immediately afterwards and notified the police. The authorities located and arrested the two perpetrators, whilst the valuables and money were returned to their rightful owner.
