Fraud case involving power cut pretext in Pella: case solved

According to enikos.gr, an elderly couple in Pella fell victim to an organised telephone fraud scheme in July, resulting in the loss of 220 gold sovereigns, €7,500 in cash and jewellery with a total value of €15,000.

The case was solved following a methodical investigation by the Regional Crime Investigation Division. A case file was drawn up against a man whose details have been identified.

The perpetrators initially contacted the victims on their landline phone, posing as a member of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Company. They claimed there was an alleged problem with the voltage of the electricity supply in their area. Subsequently, other accomplices called the victims on their mobile phones and asked them to wrap their jewellery and money in aluminium foil, place them underneath the electrical panel and leave the house door open.

In this manner, the suspect man removed the items without the elderly victims noticing anything. Police investigations are continuing in order to identify the remaining accomplices and any possible involvement on their part in similar cases. The case file will be submitted to the prosecutor of the District Court of Giannitsa.
