Unknown assailants attacked an apartment building in northern Thessaloniki with improvised incendiary devices, resulting in the death of a 72-year-old woman and injuries to three other people. The victim was Vaia Nestora.
In closed-circuit surveillance footage in the possession of the prosecution authorities, a man can be seen approaching the building on foot from the wooded park of Sheikh Su. His face is concealed and he is wearing dark clothing and a scarf. He leaves a black bag at the entrance and disappears running back into the forest.
Approximately 20 minutes later, a report was filed. Specialists estimate that the terrorists used slow-burning material, which allowed them to leave safely before the explosion.
A meeting took place at the Police Headquarters of the city under Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis, with the participation of officers from the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation units. The progress of the investigation was discussed and next steps were coordinated for identifying the perpetrators.
The attacks targeted homes of officials from the governing coalition. A former New Democracy MP lived in the apartment building that was struck. Aphrodite Nestora's father, Panagiotis Nestora, was present at the scene and, visibly shocked, observed the restoration work.
Burnt vehicles and the remains of the devices are being examined in forensic laboratories. Analysts are searching for genetic material and fingerprints on insulating tape that was used in assembly. The use of a small-displacement motorcycle as an escape vehicle is also being investigated.
Police believe that at least three people participated in carrying out the attack, with the possibility that a fourth person assisted in the planning or escape. The three injured are being treated at Hippocratic Hospital in improved condition.
