Death of 20-year-old in Argos from police gunfire: Political reactions and calls for transparency
A young man aged 20 lost his life in Argos during a chase by police officers, triggering a wave of reactions and concern about the circumstances of the incident.
According to reports, the unfortunate young man, who according to his mother was on the autism spectrum, came under gunfire whilst in a state of panic and attempting to leave the scene without carrying a weapon.
The political party "Elpidia" led by Maria Karystianou issued a statement in which it expresses its grief over the death of the young man, characterising the incident as "tragic". At the same time, it expresses strong dissatisfaction with the manner in which police forces handled the situation.
The statement notes that the involvement of the prosecuting authorities proved "dangerous" rather than protective, resulting in the loss of a human life. The party emphasises that it does not intend to prejudge the case, however it demands that the circumstances be investigated thoroughly and that facts not be concealed.
Particular emphasis is placed on the question of training for members of security forces. The statement highlights that the lack of adequate training can lead to fatal consequences, when those responsible are not in a position to assess when the use of force is necessary and when it could prove fatal.
The party underscores that citizens who fall victim to mishandling by state officials are effectively struck by "state crimes" that have deeper roots and cannot be attributed exclusively to isolated incidents.
The case is expected to be investigated further by the competent authorities, whilst the victim's family and political bodies are calling for transparency and full clarification of the circumstances.
