Significant findings have emerged regarding the death of a young man in Argolida, who lost his life during an operation by officers of the Crime Prevention and Suppression Unit. According to information released, the magnetic resonance imaging conducted on the victim showed a bullet embedded in his head.
The victim, aged twenty and on the autism spectrum, is reported to have been struck by gunfire from a police officer's weapon. The legal representative of the family, Maria Sfetsou, noted that the imaging does not indicate ricochet, as the bullet remains intact. "It can be safely concluded that it is a direct shot," she stressed.
The forensic medical opinion from Thriasio Hospital confirms the presence of a foreign object resembling a gunshot bullet. Thirteen cartridge cases were found at the scene, whilst video footage from closed-circuit surveillance cameras records more than twenty shots fired.
The two officers involved, who are being held provisionally on the more serious charge of wilful murder, maintained from the outset that the gunfire was intended to intimidate. "We had no intention of killing. The shots were fired to frighten. We deeply regret it," they stated before the judicial authorities.
Nevertheless, Georgios Kalliakmanis, honorary chairman of the police union for South-Eastern Attica, commented that rapid-fire gunshots are inconsistent with the aim of mere intimidation. Legal adviser Konstantia Dimoglídou added that the charge of possible malice indicates that those involved should have foreseen the risk of serious injury to a citizen.
The completion of ballistic analysis is expected to shed light on the weapon that was used. Meanwhile, investigations at the scene led to the discovery of three additional cartridge cases, whilst the preliminary investigation is ongoing.
