Death of 20-year-old in Thessaloniki: friend arrested who gave her MDMA

As Newsit.gr reports, a 20-year-old woman collapsed at 5 a.m. on Saturday, 11 October 2026, in a health-related establishment in eastern Thessaloniki, after using MDMA. She was transferred to Agios Dimitrios hospital, where she died that same day.

The young woman was studying Landscape Architecture at a private vocational college and worked in the family business. The 20-year-old Greek friend was arrested by police officers from the Crimes Investigation and Detection Department of Thermi. A felony charge of culpable exposure was brought against him, whilst at misdemeanour level he is being prosecuted for procurement, possession and use of narcotic substances. He was referred to appear before the 5th special narcotics investigating magistrate of Thessaloniki and remains in custody.

According to police, the two young people obtained the substance from a third, unknown person during the party. The prosecutor also brought criminal proceedings against unknown parties for a particularly aggravated case of trafficking in narcotic substances capable of causing serious bodily harm or death — a charge directed against the person from whom the procurement was made.

"Yesterday at 5 a.m. they called us and told us that our daughter was intubated at Agios Dimitrios," the girl's father told Newsit.gr. He revealed that the two children were classmates from secondary school and that three years earlier the same accused person had given substances to his daughter, resulting in her hospitalisation — at that time his identity had not been established. "Three years ago the same person gave her substances and our daughter went to hospital but then we saved her. This happened now unfortunately," he said.

According to the family, initially he was unaware of details regarding the nature of the group. He intends to investigate all the information that led to his daughter's death.

The family's lawyer, Antonis Koudroglos, called for state intervention to protect young people. "Yet another young person has been lost to dangerous narcotic substances. The state must finally engage with the protection of young people," he emphasised.
