Police operation in the Vertiskos area of Thessaloniki following an attack by a 37-year-old on patrol cars. The perpetrator barricaded himself in his home before surrendering and being taken to hospital.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, 15 July 2026, an area in Vertiskos in Thessaloniki was disrupted by an incident of violent behaviour. A 37-year-old man became agitated and caused damage to two police vehicles.
The incident began with attacks on family members. When police officers arrived to intervene, the 37-year-old turned against them. He used a crowbar and caused damage to the patrol cars that had rushed to the scene.
A confrontation followed that lasted approximately two hours. The man withdrew inside his home whilst holding the tool. He was eventually persuaded to come out and surrender to the authorities. A total of eight police officers were required to be present in the area, including men from two OPKE units and officers from the Langada Division.
According to information from Newsit, the perpetrator suffers from psychiatric problems. Following his arrest he was taken to the mental health unit of Papageorgiou hospital for hospitalisation and supervision by specialists.
