A firebombing attack on the home of a local politician in Thessaloniki. The politician's mother died from her burns; four people were injured. The counter-terrorism service is investigating the case.
Thessaloniki: Firebombing attack on politician's home kills one
In the early hours yesterday, unknown assailants attacked the residence of a local politician of the ruling centre-right New Democracy party in Thessaloniki using incendiary devices. The mother of politician Aphrodite Nestor died from her burns as a result of the attack, while four other people were injured, including the politician herself, her father, and two other residents of the building.
According to information from Greek radio station ERTnews, cited by the ORF, Greece's counter-terrorism service is examining material from security cameras to identify the perpetrators. Initial investigations indicate that at least three people participated in the attack. Video footage from surveillance cameras shows two suspects on a motorcycle placing incendiary devices in vehicles in the garage of the house. A third motorcyclist is believed to have acted as a lookout.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis strongly condemned the attack. "No tolerance for violent elimination and divisive extremism," stated the New Democracy politician and colleague of Nestor.
Greece has been repeatedly shaken by terrorist attacks and politically motivated violence in the past. Whilst most older terrorist groups have now been dismantled, armed groups from the autonomous movement continue to carry out regular firebombing and explosive attacks. Targets are frequently politicians, authorities, police stations, banks and businesses.
