From the early morning hours of Tuesday, police officers from the Organised Crime Countering Subdivision of Northern Greece are conducting an operation in Thessaloniki, in co-operation with DEDDIE, aimed at dismantling a large criminal organisation.
The members of the group were operating in many regions of the country, carrying out specialised tampering with electricity meters. Their illegal activities extended to areas of Attica, Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly and the Peloponnese, with the aim of stealing electricity.
To date, the prosecution authorities have proceeded with the arrest of three key members of the organisation. In total, 105 people are accused as perpetrators of electricity theft.
The economic damage caused to the Administrator of the Greek Electrical Energy Distribution Network (DEDDIE) is estimated to exceed 9 million euros.
The police are expected to issue a further statement with more details about the operation and its results.
